Take a look at this video, which shows the most interesting way to protest. The producer of this video is probably quite upset that he is getting ticket and went on a crash course with everything in the bike path that obstructs bike path in a means to illustrate his point that riding off the bike path can be safer than tolerating all the obstructions in it.
I find it amusing more so than effective, because, unfortunately, cyclists is a niche group of people whose opinions will always be second to other users of the road. Nonetheless, watch this video and see what you think about it.
Pretty amusing that someone would deliberatly crash around just to illustrate his point. But that's what makes New York special.
